When becoming a virtual assistant the training tells you to create an ‘ICA – ideal client avatar’. You work through age, gender, what type of business sector they would be in and then the outcome of this means that you can create specific marketing strategies to target potential clients and see if they would in fact benefit from your services.

As a sales manager for almost 16 years I have done quite a bit of training regarding adapting your communication and approach to selling to varying personalities of people and the use of the DISC profiling concept. The grid below highlights some of the characteristics portrayed by each personality.

Before you ask I am an ‘SC’, I am a ‘do-er’ I’m happy to keep my head down, get the job done and to a high standard and that is probably why I do well as a virtual assistant. I like taking chaos and making sense of it and getting it into some kind of order – that’s what gives me the best job satisfaction.

This chart then details how you should approach and adapt your techniques to get the best outcome of a relationship with each type of personality. I’m not going to lie, this kind of stuff really interests me, I loved doing this test and would recommend it to anyone.

To be able to be successful in business I don’t actually think you need to be able to find the ‘perfect’ client. That’s not to say you can’t have a target market, you can. BUT anyone can need help whatever sector, age or gender they are, the key is whether you can successfully adapt your approach to find a good balance and build a relationship with someone.

In my opinion, that is what forms the basis of a successful, long and happy partnership.
